Dry Eye? Find Out Why!

Around 25% of Canadians suffer from the uncomfortable symptoms associated with dry eye. But, relief is available. Our experienced optometrists believe that the most effective way to relieve dry eye symptoms is with regular follow-up and a targeted treatment approach.

Your personalized treatment plan might involve at-home therapies, in-office procedures, or a combination of both.

If you are suffering from dry eye symptoms, come and see us. We’ll help you find relief using state-of-the-art technology like Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy and iLux®, among others.

Our Process

After a dry eye diagnosis, we will complete a detailed baseline dry eye examination to evaluate the underlying cause of your condition. Treatment targeted at the specific cause can help to provide both long-term solutions and much-needed short-term relief.

If meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is part of the problem, we have just the technology to help. The meibomian glands are the tiny glands along the top and bottom edges of the eyelids that produce the oil layer of the tear film

The oil layer helps to keep moisture on the surface of the eye. If the meibomian glands are blocked or otherwise unable to produce oil, your tears might dry up before they can do their job—keeping your eyes moist and comfortable.

In-Office iLux® Treatment

The iLux® is an in-office treatment for people with meibomian gland dysfunction. It uses an LED-based heat source to warm the inner and outer surface of the eyelids to melt any blockages trapped inside the meibomian glands.

Once sufficient heat has been applied to melt the secretions, your eye doctor will apply compression to the lids to express the clogged meibomian glands. Treatment is delivered directly to the blocked glands and takes between 8 and 12 minutes for both eyes.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

Often, inflammation is a significant factor in causing dry eye. This inflammation can stop the meibomian glands from producing oil at their optimum level.

We use the Lumenis Optima™ Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) machine to target and selectively treat any abnormal blood vessels caused by inflammation. IPL treatment will also help liquefy any hardened oil in the meibomian glands.

The therapy can kill any Demodex mites that live along the eyelid margins—these mites can contribute to infection and inflammation.

IPL is an energy-based therapy that works to control the inflammatory process.

The benefits to IPL therapy include:

  • It’s a non-invasive treatment option.
  • There are very few complications.
  • It can produce lasting results.
  • It’s well-tolerated among most patients.
