What Does a Contact Lens Exam Entail?

When you come to see us for a contact lens exam, we will first discuss your current eye health, any concerns you have, and your medical history. If we determine that contact lenses are right for you, we will proceed with the necessary measurements and testing.

Corneal Topography

Corneal topography measures your cornea in the same way you would measure a mountain in a topographic map. The device characterizes the surface of your cornea, pinpointing any irregularities that may require specialty lenses.

Meibography

We use meibography to examine your meibomian glands under infrared illumination. If your meibomian glands do not produce enough meibum, your eyes may feel dry, making contact lenses uncomfortable.

Although chronic dry eye conditions do not entirely rule out the use of contact lenses, it may mean you require specialty lenses or treatment.

Specialty Lenses

We offer guidance and support to our patients that require specialty lenses. Our knowledgeable staff will guide you through finding the contacts that fit your eyes and lifestyle best.

Scleral lenses rest directly on the whites of the eyes, or the sclera, vaulting over the cornea. This style of lens provides relief and extended moisture for irregular corneas.

Toric lenses are made for astigmatism, with different powers in different parts of the lens. They are designed to stay in place without rotating, keeping the appropriate power in the correct part of the eye.

Hybrid lenses are a combination of rigid gas permeable and soft contact lenses, making them comfortable to wear with the optical properties of a rigid lens and suitable for corneal irregularities.

Aspheric lenses are designed to assist with corneal irregularities by gradually changing the refractive power from the center of the lens to the periphery.

Multifocal lenses have different refractive powers in the same lens to provide clear vision for presbyopia and treatment of myopia.
