It is important to have your child’s eyes examined at various stages of their lives to monitor for various conditions and early signs of disease. The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends a specific frequency of examinations to assess developing visual systems accurately.
Your child should have their first eye exam between 6 and 9 months old. At this point, we’ll perform a red reflex test and determine if further assessment is necessary.
When your child is old enough to cooperate with a standard letter chart, bring them in for an examination of their visual acuity. They may require vision correction depending on their results.
Bringing your child in for a thorough assessment allows us to test for and begin treatment of conditions like strabismus (misaligned eyes) or amblyopia (“lazy eye”).
Your child should have a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year after they begin school. If issues start to become apparent, we can take measures to correct them and maintain good eye health.
Keeping a watchful eye on your child’s behaviour is helpful to discovering early indicators of eye disease.
Symptoms like holding books or digital devices very close to the face or sitting too close to the television may indicate early signs of myopia (nearsightedness) or other refractive error.
Frequent headaches, squinting, or closing one eye when reading may indicate a need for vision therapy.
Complaints of sore eyes or frequent blinking and eye rubbing may be an indication that your child’s eyes are irritated, which could mean conjunctivitis or dry eye. Watch for any abnormal discharge, redness, or swelling or their eyes, as that could be a sign of an infection.
We leave room in our schedule for emergency eye care, so please give us a call if your child’s eye health deteriorates drastically or suddenly.
