Imagine a Life Free From Glasses & Contacts

Refractive surgery has been helping patients achieve clear vision for many years, allowing eye care professionals to improve vision for people with myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Incorporating lasers into corrective procedures has drastically changed the eye care space and allowed people to enjoy freedom from glasses or contacts.

Laser eye surgery can provide patients with long-lasting visual correction, with minimal healing time. The procedure has evolved into a quick and relatively easy process that results in only mild discomfort during healing.

If you are interested in having laser eye surgery, please contact us for a consultation.

Types of Refractive Surgery

There are different types of refractive surgery, and which one is right for you will depend on your needs and refractive error. Most procedures involve reshaping the cornea to allow light to focus properly on the back of the eye.

PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, is a procedure for individuals looking to correct mild to moderate myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. During the procedure, a laser is used to remove the top layer of the eye, called the epithelium. The cornea is then reshaped carefully using a laser, and a bandage contact lens is placed on top.

The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes, and the healing process takes around a week. The contact lens bandage should be worn for 5 to 7 days following the surgery, and you should expect to follow up with your doctor a few times over the next 6 months.

LASIK, or laser in-situ keratomileusis, is the most popular laser eye surgery and is suitable for any individual that is nearsighted, farsighted, or has astigmatism. During the procedure, a small flap is made with a laser on the outer layer of the eye. A laser is then used to reshape the cornea, and the flap is replaced to act as a natural bandage.

The procedure is fast and efficient, usually taking around 10 minutes to complete. The healing process is rapid, with improved vision returning a few days following the surgery. Make sure to attend all follow-up appointments to ensure your eyes are healing correctly.

Refractive lens exchange is a procedure that involves replacing your eye’s natural lens with an artificial one, much like cataract surgery. However, unlike cataract surgery, the lens being replaced is clear instead of cloudy.

If other types of refractive surgery are not an option for a patient, refractive lens exchange is often an effective alternative. Refractive lens exchange can be used to correct presbyopia, extreme farsightedness, and myopia if necessary.

Before the Procedure

The Consultation

When you come into the office for a consultation, we’ll examine your eyes thoroughly and look for any conditions or symptoms that may interfere with the procedure. We’ll also discuss the type of correction you need, what to expect from the surgery, and answer all of your questions.

Before the Surgery

If you are a daily contacts wearer, you’ll likely have to stop wearing them for a while before the procedure. Rigid gas permeable lenses cannot be worn for 3 weeks before the procedure; any other types can be worn up until 3 days before the surgery.

On the day of the surgery, eat a light but healthy meal and take any prescribed medications. Don’t wear any eye cream or makeup and avoid hairstyles or accessories that will make it difficult to place your head beneath the laser.

If you are interested in laser eye surgery, please book an appointment with us at your earliest convenience.
