Helping Your Child See Clearly
Myopia, or nearsightedness, affects around 30% of the Canadian population, which means that hundreds of thousands of people struggle to see long distances every day. The condition is a refractive error caused by an eyeball that is too long or a cornea that is too curved, preventing light from focusing correctly on the retina.
Myopia usually starts in childhood and continues to worsen with age. Prescription glasses or contact lenses can correct the error while you wear them, allowing you to see objects clearly at a distance, but there is currently no cure.
If myopia is left untreated, the risk of developing eye conditions such as retinal detachment, cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma increases significantly.
